So one of the things that I really wanted to get into this year was a bit of photography. I've started developing an interest over the last few years playing around with my compact camera but figured that if I'm going to do this properly I'd better get a decent camera.
So after much humming and hawing and driving several people in various camera shops demented with questions, I settled on getting one of these.
Thankfully some of my very generous family (thanks ma and Dale!) chipped in for one for Christmas (I'm not bleedin made of money!) and I've been utterly baffled by it ever since.
So having been inspired by Claire's portrait a day project I figured its about time I started shooting something. So here are the first few efforts.

Hiya Colin,
So sorry - only saw your comment about RAW files today!
The boyf does a bit of comment approving, so I don't always catch 'em!
I'm not much better than a beginner myself, so, as far as my layman's understanding of RAW files goes, I can't give you a brilliant breakdown, just my experience of what the differences are between JPEG and RAW.
When shooting RAW, you can do things like alter the exposure by a few points, change the white balance and the temperature of the pic during the post-processing (either with Photoshop or with the software that came with your camera). For a beginner like me, this is a really handy tool because it means a shot that might have been under-exposed or on the wrong white balance setting due to carelessness is now salvageable.
This Flickr discussion is quite handy:

Hope that helps!
Hi Nathalie, no worries at all, fair play to ya for getting back to me!
I finally signed up for the Temple Bar photography course so hopefully that'll help somewhat cause I'm completely clueless at the moment - cheers for the link by the way!
No worries :)
When are you starting the course? Let me know how it goes. I really want to do it myself, but am off on holidays for a couple of weeks in April so will wait until after that. I'm dying to do it though - I'm fairly certain that I've missed lots of learning curves doing this DIY-style!
These shots are lovely, btw.
Thanks a million Nathalie! From what I've seen over on ye're blog your DIY approach is paying in spades! Loved the shots from the Choice awards!
The course is starting in June but hopefully I'll get some more practice in before then - I've been atrociously lax since Christmas!
